The initiative

Created to unite the Strait, now an international event

The Trofeo Anassilao was born with a precise idea: to unite the two shores of the Strait through sport, as Anaxilas of Rhegion did over 2,500 years ago. The tyrant who brought Rhegion and Zancle together and won at the Olympic Games of 480 BC, he was the first Olympic champion in the history of Reggio.

That message set a journey in motion. Born as an initiative of the Strait, the Trophy has grown edition after edition into an event of international scope with its fifth edition. Reggio Calabria is easy to reach: find out how to get here.

The statue of Anaxilas
Beyond sport

Anaxilas, the champion who united two shores

Tyrant of Rhegion around 500 BC, Anaxilas was the first to politically unite the two banks of the Strait, creating a state that included present-day Reggio Calabria and Zancle, today’s Messina. Under his rule the city knew its greatest splendour in the ancient Mediterranean.

He was also an athlete: in 480 BC, at the 73rd Olympiad, he won the mule-drawn chariot race. The triumph was celebrated by the poet Simonides of Ceos and stamped on the silver coins of Reggio and Messina. Aristotle recounts that, after the victory, he held a sumptuous banquet inviting all the Greeks present at Olympia.

A sport that unites rather than divides: the legacy of Anaxilas, from history to today.

Reggio by the sea

The Lungomare Falcomatà, described by D’Annunzio as “the most beautiful kilometre in Italy”, Corso Garibaldi and the Aragonese Castle, a fortress overlooking the historic centre.

The Riace Bronzes

The National Museum houses the celebrated Bronzes, masterpieces of 5th-century BC Greek sculpture and a symbol of Calabria around the world.

The flavours of Calabria

From the ’nduja of Spilinga to Aspromonte cheeses, from DOP extra virgin olive oil to Cirò wine: the typical products of Calabrian tradition.
